What is Sclerology and how does it work ?

By David Holden, ND, MS, Principal, Institute of Applied Iridology & Sclerology

Many of you have heard about Sclerology since we brought it to New Zealand in 1998. Common questions asked are what is it ? How does it work ? Is it better than Iridology ? Is it complex, involved or take long to train in ?

Sclerology has two distinct sources; Native American Indian, which is the form that we teach here in New Zealand and Australia, and the Chinese version. Little research has been done into the Oriental version as the sparse texts are only available in Chinese and interpretation is a long complex and involved process. Much more accessible is the Native American Indian tradition that has been written down directly into English.

Sclerology is defined as the interpretation of the red lines in the whites of the eyes and their meaning for health evaluation and analysis. The work that we teach here in New Zealand is from the original manuscripts and direct verbal teachings of Dr Alexander Stuart Wheelwright who was both a Herbalist and a Medicine Man with two tribes in the Native American Indian traditions. A controversial character, he gave permission for his teachings to be written down and taught by Dr. Jack Tips, a well-known lecturer, author and practitioner of Clinical Nutrition, Homeopathy and Natural Medicine in Austin, Texas, USA.

Sclerology works by Neuro-muscular reflexes from the brain and optic nerve into the four rectus muscles surrounding each eye. These reflexes transmit direct informa-tion about the blood, lymph, and nervous system integrity of all parts of the physical body onto the four main quadrants of the sclera, or white portion of the eyes.

Sclerology is not "better" than Iridology, nor is Iridology "better" than Sclerology. Both eye sciences are part of the Integrated Eye Diagnosis system that we have been teaching in Australia & New Zealand since 1998.

Dr. Jack Tips states: "Iridologists use Sclerology as a second witness to the information that the body is trying to tell us about it's internal state. . . . more accomplished Iridologists in the US now use both systems because their accuracy rate improves helping them treat patients and clients more effectively."

We teach Sclerology downunder as a stand alone system as well as an additional, confirming diagnostic technique for the competent Natural Therapist who is striving for better diagnostic abilities and treatment options for their patients and clients. Obviously the more training in related subjects (e.g. Homeopathy, Nutrition, Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Naturopathy, Herbalism, Homeobotanicals, Bodywork, Counselling, etc.) that the practitioner has studied, the more useful they will find Sclerology in clinical applications.

For the general public, confidence in the practitioner improves as their ability to sort out the "wood from the trees" dramatically increases using this technology. This results in a greater chance of getting well faster and staying that way.

Sclerology has been around for a long time (at least 3000 years in Chinese Medicine and Native American Indian traditions). One thing is for sure - we haven't heard the last of this intriguing system of health evaluation. Advances in Computer applications, emotional interpretation of signs and more Western research by the ISI and it's affiliates, is revealing the inherent wisdom of this system of health analysis.

How To Chart The Sclera

Professional Sclera Chart

Most Sclerologist simply chart "around the clock". They lift the eyelid of either eye and have the client look straight down.

It's important to watch the iris as the client look straight down to verify that the eye is indeed STRAIGHT DOWN. Some people look off to the side when you say, "straight down". If this occurs, give them something to look at such as a paper on your lap or the cap of your pen so they are looking straight down. This ensures that twelve o'clock in the sclera is twelve o'clock on your chart and your lines are drawn in the right zone.

Chart the lines in that quadrant according to their "o' clock" points of origination and termination.

Then have the client look straight up ensuring the six o' clock sclera area is exposed directly at the bottom of the eye. Chart the lines in that quadrant.
Then have the client look straight left and straight right and chart the lines in those quadrants for each eye.

Occasionally you'll need to verify a line that falls in between the quadrants (i.e. 2:00, 4:00, 8:00, 10:00). Just hold your pen up where you want the client to look and keep looking while you verify a line or chart its actual pathway.

WITH AN ACCURATE CHART, A SCLEROLOGIST CAN PROVIDE AN INTERPRETATION AND INSIGHTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE HEALTH.

An Analysis of Lacunae

Polygrandular Constitution - Various lacunae, crypts and defect signs around the autonomic nerve wreath. Glandular function insufficiency, such as digestive, pancreas, gall baldder, adrenals, pituitary, pineal, and thyroid.

The picture showing various lacunae - semi-open and close lacunae with grey shading fibers , loose weave, indicates an irritation, inflammation and poor resistance to infection in the Lung zone. This person possible having asthma, bronchitis, respiratory and sinus problem.

Stairstep lacuna in the ovary / intestinal zone . An alarm sign for further checking the affected area.

An insufficiency of kidney showing the diamond shape loose weave fibers with so called Rhomboid lacuna. These multitude of rhomboid lacuane show a genetic history and tendency to immuno depression and diverticulitis in the large intestine.

Collarette Crypts seating above the pupillary border.

Collarette Crypts - These crypts can indicate a familial history of bowel imbalance and an inherited disposition to gastrointestinal disease. Collarette crypts\ small lacunae just inside the collarette or nutrive zone. This is a genetic marker and indicates a family history of GI deficiency.

Stress - Time Risk

A) In "Time Risk "factor, the person might experiencing unfavorable incident in the age of 30 ~ 35. The collarette was indentation ( flatten)toward pupillary border at the degree of 90 ~ 180 (anti-clockwise).

B) A sharp deep vertical line ( 180 degree ) was deposited on the adreanl gland, indicates this person under emotional stress.

An advance 3 concentrated stress lines

An advance Throat/ Thyroid stress extending with 3 concentrated Y- fork stress lines, indicates this person might having thyroid problem or heavy smoking addicted.

Sclera Analysis - 9

1) A vertical stress line extends toward to small intestine zone.
2) An advanced thick reddish Y-Fork stress line concentrated in the colon reflex zone.
3) A recticulate advanced stress line deposited on the Adrenal & Kidney reflez zone.

Possible insufficiency in colon, adrenal and kidney function :
- indigestion, constipation, flatulence.
- mental stress, work pressure - adrenal exhausted.
- detoxification system imbalance - liver & kidney.

Iris Analysis - 5

A) Large Pupil with a Small Thin Collarette Narrowed Toward the Pupil.
- Uses energy quickly.
- Digestion and absorption capability is fairly limited.
- Large ciliary zone indicates that the formation and use of energy is large.
- Might having slow bowel movement, constipation.
- This person has small digestive ability, lowered energy reserve, energy gets used up quickly and has low stamina.

B) Possible Stairstep Lacuna
- The Stairstep lacuna is a step ladder, often sloping formed of a pattern of 3 or more bars of stromal tissue dividing 3 small lacunae or crypts.
- indicates GI disturbances.

C) Protuberance Honeycomb deposited in the sigmoid \ Rectum Ventral area
- The protuberance is accompanied with a loose fiber weave, possible parasites or fungal infestation could take place.

D) Stress Rings & Scurf Rim
- Intermittent stress rings in the Spleen & lung area.
- Scurf Rim ( Black Rim )in the elimination zone, possible having skin related problem.

Inner Pupillary Border

The studies that are presently available on the Inner Pupillary Border were produced by some of the Masters in the field of classical Iridology, such as J. Angerer, and S. Rizzi these formed a foundation for further studies.

Radial Furrows \ Radii Solaris

A very deep groove of stress fiber extending 360 degree around the iris.

Radial deep grooves extended from collarette through out the elimination zone area. Represented lack of nerve energy in body system, toxic wastes settle that is a tendency for parasites to dwell there. Function insufficiency in Liver, Gall Bladder, Pancreas, Spleen, Kidney, Pituitary, Pineal and accumulation of toxidity.

Crypts

Crypts - some very small black lacunae deposited on the Liver & Gall Bladder zone, possible in function disturbances. Observed that 2 Anxiety Tetanic lines crossing in ciliary and detoxification zone.

Polyglandular Constitution

Lacunae and honeycombs positioned in a "daisy petal" pattern around the autonomic nerve wreath. The collarette is floppy and widely distended appears flowery. Primary inherited weakness of intestinal glands and tract. Poor absorption of nutrients. Suitable environment for parasitic invasion, yeast, fungus or bacteria.

The lack of resilience in endocrine system. The structural signs was genetic inherited.

Constrcited \ Tight Collarette Wreath

Constricited collarette indicates slow bowel movement, constipation pattern, possible instestines are narrowed, constraction and stricture.

認識皮紋 - Dermatoglyphics
