Free Cancer Test kit Giveaways on National Day

THE Malaysian Hindu Sangam will give away free faecal occult blood test (FOBT) kits to detect colorectal cancer at Klinik Derma SivaSanta at 11, River Road on August 31 at 10am.

Its Penang council’s social and welfare sub-committee chairman P. Murugiah said those taking the FOBT test will given a test kit comprising a bottle and sampling stick, an instruction leaflet on how to collect blood samples at home, small plastic bag and reply envelope with a form.

Stool samples are to be mailed back to the Malaysian National Cancer Society, Penang branch within two days from the sample collection. The date of the stool sample collection must be written in the form provided, he added.

He also said those with bleeding piles, having menstruation or are unwell, should not take the test.

colorectal cancer, which is cancer of the colon and rectum, is the second most common cancer for men and women in Penang,

“The disease however is preventable if detected early using the FOBT which is a prelimi- nary screening test to detect the presence of blood in the stool,” he said in a statement.
According to a report by the National Cancer Registry, there were 1,619 cases of male colorectal cancer from a total of 21,773 cases reported in the peninsula.

The kits will be given out on first-come first-served basis and priority will be given to those aged 50 and above.
